@Abdullah - I was referring to the anti-Sikh descrimination that took place after 9/11 when there were racist bigots who would attack anyone who were or looked like Muslims.

I'll assume that English is not your first language and I won't take offense from your comment since that sentence is taken completely out of context.

Hi Tigre, there isn't all that much that you can't get in China. I would recommend bringing something small and mass produced that is from your home country to give as gifts. For example, I brought Ghiradelli chocolate to give to friends and people I meet. It's just something nice to do.

There are some things you can't get: burritos, good cheese, spray-on tans, and good chocolate are a few. More difficult things to get would be stuff like American brands that you particuarly like, sunscreen, and vitamins. Hope this helps you out a bit.

Chunzhu,

I stumbled upon your post, and somehow, it comforted me and frustrated me at the same time. I have applied to probably 40 schools, of which around 4 have responded at all. Two of which were to tell me that they would not be able to find a placement for me because of my Japanese ethnicity! I am banging my head against a wall at this point, because I will land there August 1st, job or no job. I will work my alumni connections to their fullest, per your suggestion. I can't afford to be shy anymore! Anyway, just wanted to let you know that your post made me smile :)

I know your objective is to remain neutral, but it wouldn't be bad to show some less subtle bias. You should have another blog where you let everything out (Might result in substantial flaming)!

I'm pretty ignorant of many issues compared to you, but I think it's understandable why people could hate a country. The most common reason that Chinese people hate Japan is because of the war atrocities committed in WWII. Now what caused those war atrocities? Probably the Japanese mindset. From what I've heard (could be completely wrong), the Japanese had a mindset of all-or-nothing during the wartime. When they invaded China, they killed, raped, and plundered all those who they conquered and saluted those who decided to die fighting. In fact, before the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, the Japanese civilians were pretty much prepared to fight until even many of the civilians died.

It's as you said, a country is basically an idea. What that idea drives people to do however, is what drives other to hate them. It's entire possible to hate a country and an idea.

never thought a system complicated enough could ever be explained on the macro level by any theory
these people are just trying to do that, in vain

can someone ever identify actually ONE instance of the butterfly effect? All the air molecules are just so rational but in entirety they are just so mystical
same should be for the market world
